Suicide is the most preventable cause of death, and we all have a role to play. Today on World Suicide Prevention Day, as well as every other day of the year, we are invited to reduce stigmas, advocate, encourage seeking help, honour the memories of those we’ve lost, and support those who have survived and those who grieve.
As stated on Suicide Prevention Aust In Australia alone, nearly 10 million people have been affected by suicide, which equates to almost half our nation. Together, let’s embrace our collective responsibility, champion hope and take meaningful actions to save lives.
The statistics below come from a 2022-23 annual report:
- 3,000+ suicide deaths each year
- 12 deaths per 100,000 people
- Suicide is the leading cause of death among young Australians aged 15-24
- The rate of Indigenous Australians is more than double that of non-Indigenous Australians
- Males account for 75% of deaths
- The highest suicide rates are for males aged 85 or older
- Survivors of suicide attempts are among the highest at risk of future deaths
- People in rural and remote Australia are more likely to die by suicide than those living in our major cities
- It is the 15th most common cause of death
It is important to understand that these are not just numbers. They each represent a life lost, or a life affected by suicide in other forms.
We are all encouraged to check in on our loved ones. Start the conversation. Complete training to make you more equip to support those around you. Be intentional in your listening, and follow through with supporting actions.
