NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee and this year, begins on Sunday 3rd, and continues until Sunday 10th of July. This week sees celebrations of history, culture, tradition, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and is celebrated by people from all walks of life right across Australia.
2022’s NAIDOC week theme is ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’. Although Australia already has a proud history of getting up, standing up and showing up, it’s important not to lose that momentum, and continue to push for systemic change for our country.
Ways you can be involved in NAIDOC week include displaying NAIDOC week posters in your workplace or school, discussing Aboriginal culture and Indigenous Australian role models, visit local sacred sites and investigate their history, invite an Indigenous Elder to speak at your workplace or school or attend a flag raising ceremony.
Another important part of NAIDOC week is the Awards Ceremony, to showcase and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s incredible efforts and contributions they make within their communities and the wider community. In the past, the awards have included NAIDOC Person Award, Lifetime Achievement, Female Elder Award, Male Elder Award, Sportsperson and Youth Award. This year for 2022 we see four new awards, NAIDOC Creative Talent Award, Caring for Country and Culture Award, Education and Innovation Award.
