International Day of Charity

HANDS

On the 5th of September, we celebrate International Day of Charity, a day chosen in order to commemorate the life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the renowned nun and missionary. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for “work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.”

This day was established with the objective of “sensitizing and mobilizing people, non-government organisations, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.” It seeks to enhance social responsibility and increase public support of charitable causes.

The UN established critical goals to highlight the charitable works we should engage in, including people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership.

3 ways you can be involved with International Charity day include:

  1. Donate to charity – each charity you donate to have their own goals they put their donations towards. This could include providing educational materials, meals, clothing, etc.
  2. Volunteer – many charities are always looking for extra hands to help them serve the community. Examples include Salvation Army, St Vincent De Paul and soup kitchens.
  3. Attend an event – at these events you will meet like-minded people who have the same passions and care about the same causes. This harmony is the first step to taking action.

International Day of Charity is important as it reminds us to give back, spread awareness and find causes we believe in.
