Flanders Fields
Flanders fields is a well-known memorial poem, written by John McCrae, a Canadian doctor and teacher who served in WW1. It is often read aloud during services for Remembrance Day, which is coming up on the 11th of November (this year, on a Friday). For an in-depth explanation and analysis of the poem, view here.
All Souls Day
All Souls’ Day, celebrated on the 2nd of November, is a day where Christian communities remember their deceased family and friends. In Catholic belief, the soul of a person goes to 1-of-3 places: heaven, hell, or purgatory.
All Saints Day
There are more than 10,000 Saints recognised in the Catholic Church. To celebrate each one of them, on the 1st of November, we celebrate All Saints Day. This day is to venerate all the holy men and woman that were canonized by the Church. The first Saint, St Ulrich of Augsburg was canonised in 993, and more recently, St Carlos Acutis canonised in 2020.
Archaeologists Discover Old Testament History
Archaeologists have been working to reconstruct a site in Mosul, an Iraqi city, that was bulldozed as part of the extremists’ systematic destruction of cultural heritage by the Islamic State group fighters in 2016. This restoration project intends to turn this damaged site into an educational centre.
World Mission Sunday
“Every Christian is called to be a missionary and witness to Christ. And the Church, the community of Christ’s disciples, has no other mission than that of bringing the Gospel to the entire world by bearing witness to Christ. To evangelize is the very identity of the Church.” – Pope Francis.
National Carer’s Week & Young Carers
Did you know that some of your students could be young carers? Approximately 235,000 carers are aged between the ages of 12 and 25. Carers are people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue, or who are frail aged – anyone at any time can become a carer.
20 Years On

Today marks 20 years since the tragic events of the Bali Bombings, which took place on October 12th, 2002. This attack killed 202 people, 88 of whom were Australians, and left another 209 people injured.
National Safe Work Month
Statistics show that $736 MILLION of workers’ compensation paid was related to mental health conditions in 2018-19, 120,355 serious workers’ compensation claims were made in 2019-2022, and as of last month, 115 Australian deaths were work-related deaths this year alone. October is National Safe Work Month – a time to commit to building a safe and healthy workplace.
World Teacher’s Day
On the 5th of October we celebrate World Teacher’s Day. Due to sometimes falling within the school holidays, schools may choose to celebrate this day on the last Friday in October. Without teachers, no one would learn how to read and write, complete math equations or write essays. We depend on teachers to perform basic everyday tasks and to extend our knowledge. As teachers mold future generations, it’s important to say, ‘Thank You!’.
